Le livre érotique est une vieille tradition française. Contre l'acharnement des censeurs, en profitant parfois de la tolérance des pouvoirs affaiblis, les auteurs lestes ont cherché à livrer au public le récit des pires turpitudes par goût des obscénités ou de la bravade, pour affirmer la poussée du moi, la volonté de briser les fers de la vieille société, sinon pour moquer les ridicules prescriptions de la morale. L'époque du libertinage aura été la grande époque du livre lubrique, l'apogée de la littérature galante, mais le XIXe siècle et l'entrée dans le noir des conventions bourgeoises n'ont pas tué la flamme des écrits graveleux, loin s'en faut : jusque sous les rigueurs du moralisme le plus tatillon a survécu un véritable roman poivré, inventif et téméraire. Comment cette histoire du livre érotique a-t-elle été possible ? A quelles contorsions les éditeurs galants du XXe siècle ont-ils dû se livrer pour réussir à survivre malgré les tracasseries administratives et les condamnations pour outrage aux bonnes moeurs ?
