Dès qu'il est reconnu chef des Français Libres par le gouvernement britannique, le 28 juin 1940, le général de Gaulle confie au capitaine Dewavrin (alias colonel Passy), le soin d'organiser ce qui deviendra le Bureau central de renseignements et d'action (BCRA). A la Libération, 270 réseaux du BCRA sont reconnus en tant qu'unités des Forces Françaises Combattantes. Ajax était de ceux-là. Réseau d'action et de renseignement créé au printemps 1943, dirigé jusqu'à la Libération par le commissaire de police Achille Peretti, sa spécificité résidait en ce que l'essentiel de ses effectifs (près de 1 200 hommes et femmes) était constitué de policiers. Situés au coeur même des rouages de l'administration en charge de l'application de la répression vichyste - fonctionnaires félons aux yeux de Vichy qui n'a jamais cessé de les traquer -, les membres d'Ajax ont représenté pour Londres une source inestimable d'information. L'armée britannique évoque le rôle d'Achille Peretti et l'importance du réseau Ajax dans la citation qui accompagnait l'attribution du Distinguished Service Order : | ... Au cours de l'exécution de cette mission, il créa un système couvrant toute la France [...] que le War Office considère en qualité comme la meilleure de ses sources d'origine française.
